From 5 December 2020, particular businesses must maintain contact registers for WA Health Department COVID-19 contact tracing, if required.
If COVID-19 is detected in the WA community, contact registers help to protect us all by enabling the WA Health Contact Team to quickly identify and assist anyone that may have been exposed to COVID-19.
To help, the WA Government has developed a free app, SafeWA, which will provide businesses with a digital contact register system.
SafeWA is an efficient and safe way to record patron and visitor contact details where they can check-in, using the app.
Download the SafeWA app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store now.
Maintaining Contact Registers to keep WA safe
From Saturday, December 5 mandatory contact registers (of their staff and patrons) will be required at relevant businesses, as an extra safety measure as part of COVID safe principles instigated by the WA State Government.
Anyone who attends particular businesses will be required to register their contact details (unless getting take-away). This includes patrons, staff, volunteers and contractors.
Businesses or venues required to keep a contact register include:
- food and licenced venues (restaurants, cafés, bars, pubs, taverns, nightclubs);
- gyms, indoor sporting centres and pools;
- places of worship and funeral parlours;
- beauty and personal care services including hairdressers and barbers;
- galleries and museums;
- cinemas, theatres and other entertainment venues;
- auction houses and real estate inspections;
- community facilities, libraries and halls;
- zoos and amusement parks;
- function centres; and
- accommodation facilities that already have check-in arrangements in place (i.e. hostels, hotels, large campgrounds).
Businesses will need to record:
- name
- contact number
- location
- date and arrival time at the venue
- email.
This information must be kept securely for 28 days.
SafeWA App
The State Government has released a free app, SafeWA, which will provide businesses with a digital COVID-19 contact register system, endorsed by the Department of Health.
SafeWA includes key features such as unique QR codes for venues which patrons can scan to register their attendance. Data will only be accessible by authorised Department of Health contact tracing personnel, should COVID-19 contact tracing be necessary. Records will be kept for 28 days and not used for any other purpose.
The SafeWA app is optional to use and businesses must have a paper-based contact register available as an alternative method for people who are not using the SafeWA app or prefer non-digital options.

Kalgoorlie-Boulder Community Care Collective
This Facebook group provides an online platform for the famous Goldfields spirit to shine, to connect and support both those in need and those willing to help out. We aim to help each other through a global health pandemic (and beyond!).
This was born from a couple of caring members of the community who wanted to take action at a local level to bring people together during a health crisis.
The group is supported by local members of Parliament Kyle McGinn MLC and Kyran O'Donnell MLA, as well as Kalgoorlie-Boulder Volunteer Centre and Goldfield's Women's Health Care Centre. This cross-industry approach ensures our most vulnerable are being supported at all levels. This can be from sharing positivity and human connection (1.5m apart of course), all the way to offering assistance with groceries, and hooking people up with support services.
The platform is also ensuring everyone knows where to go to access mental health services through active promotion.
The hashtag #BeABuddy is being used to generate awareness and volunteers. Visit their
Facebook group for more information.
