The 2018 City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder YouthFest will highlight the bright light of young people, and put the spotlight on the many different youth services and agencies in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, as part of the Youth Week WA theme for 2018, “Illuminate - Djoondal Djoomba”.
The theme, has a two fold meaning, with Illuminate relating to space; time; the future of young people, bringing light to young people, and shining bright, and positive mental health. Djoondal Djoomba was inspired by the 'Carers of Everything' Nyoongar Dreamtime story of country, which is about the star woman and spirits coming from darkness to light.
City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder CEO John Walker said there were lots of great activities planned for YouthFest that brought to light not only the importance of young people in the community, but also the many different services and opportunities for youth in the community.
“There will be something for everyone at YouthFest this year, with a Scooter competition, inflatable obstacle courses, the Football West and Perth Glory Youth Team inflatable soccer pitch and a three on three basketball competition,” he said.
“There will also be the PCYC Arcade area, arts activities and competitions run by HOPE Community Services, a traditional cook up of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander food by the Youth Justice team, as well as some of Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s best local DJ’s bringing some great beats to the event.
“This event is really aimed at bringing young people and the different youth service providers in our community together in a safe and inclusive environment, where they can engage in a fun and healthy way.
“YouthFest is a really important event, especially following immediately on from KidsFest, as it offers something different and distinct for the older youth in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, especially those who are too old for KidsFest.Between the two events, the City is making sure that the full range of young people, from 0 to 25, are catered for with fun, free activities.”
YouthFest is a free event for young people aged 12 to 25 and will be held at Kingsbury Park and the Lord Forrest Precinct, corner of MacDonald and Cassidy Streets Kalgoorlie, from 6pm to 9pm on Friday 13 April 2018.
