Kalgoorlie-Boulder residents have spent more than half a million dollars at local participating businesses during a four week period, injecting a substantial boost to the economy.
City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder Mayor John Bowler said the participation in the Hey Big Spender! Campaign, a joint initiative of the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder and the Kalgoorlie Miner, more than double both the local participation and the local spend compared to the previous year.
“This is a campaign that has been run for a few years now, and we have seen the participation and spend more than double over the same period from 2018 to 2018,” Mr Bowler said.
“A massive 3564 entries were received for the four week campaign in 2019, which tallied up to a whopping $525,954.22 – more than half a million dollars – spent by local people at local businesses, compared to $241,459 spent by 1304 people in the same period in 2018.
“This is amazing! When you consider that 64 per cent of that local spend, in this case around $336,600, will stay right here in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, you can see the significant positive effect this will have not only on local businesses, but also on the wider community.
“It’s our local businesses who are supporting our sporting clubs and community groups, and giving our kids – the next generation of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, their first jobs. Buying local is an investment in our community and our future.”
