City urges for safe pool barricade as summer approaches

City urges for safe pool barricade as summer approaches The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder checks pool and spa barricade fencing on a 4-yearly schedule to make sure the barricades are compliant with the State Government's legislation. The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder will be conducting its pool barricade inspections in the coming weeks.

In Western Australia approximately 40 per cent of drowning deaths occur in swimming pools. The State Government legislates that pool barricade fencing is required around swimming pools and spas to assist in the prevention of childhood drowning. This is particularly important for children under five years of age who are most at risk.

CEO John Walker said, “The City encourages all property owners with either a pool or spa to make sure their fencing is maintained in good working order at all times. Given the warmer months are coming, now is the time to do a safety check on your own fencing and gates to protect your family.”

Mr Walker added, “The City will be sending letters to residents who are due their four yearly inspection in the coming weeks. Information about pool or spa inspections will be provided and the letter will request the owner to phone the City to schedule a convenient inspection time.”

Information on pool safety and a checklist can be found on Royal Lifesaving website. If you are unsure of compliance or wish to know when your barricade is due for an inspection please contact the City’s Building Services on 9021 9600.
