On Wednesday 11 May 2022, the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder unveiled the ‘Bonds of Harmony’ art piece at its new location, the William Grunt Library.
With the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s St Barbara Square and Laneway set to undergo a huge transformation in the coming months as part of the Kal City Centre project, there was no longer space to house the art in its former location.
In consultation with local artist, Laurel Burke, and Bobby-Lee from Art Gold, the City evaluated several possible locations, with the new location agreed to be the William Grunt Library.
“Art Gold was thrilled to be included in the consultation regarding the relocation of Laurel's artwork.” Says Art Gold Coordinator, Bobby-Lee.
“We formed in 2008 to act for and on behalf of the Arts community and by being involved in the original consultation, we could help to ensure that the Public Art Piece remains on view in our community for generations to come.”
The Bonds of Harmony mosaic art piece represents the heart of Kalgoorlie-Boulder with its gorgeous natural landscapes stretching from land to sea, and elements of the historic gold rush that made Kalgoorlie famous. The mosaic measures 3.2m x 2m, is made from marble pieces and is built on a 6-inch concrete slab.
Local artist Laurel Burke was the Goldfields Region’s winner of Western Australia’s biggest community arts project, State Images. Her winning piece was first officially unveiled to the public at Perth’s Barrack Square redevelopment in late 2000, before its final destination where it was to be permanently displayed in the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder.
Bobby-Lee states, “It's really encouraging to know, as a community arts worker, that the City was so committed to preserving this little piece of local art history.”
City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder Mayor, John Bowler, said “preserving community art for generations to come is important to the City and we thank Ms Burke and Art Gold for their active involvement in the relocation of this local piece.”
