Senior citizens residing in Kalgoorlie-Boulder are invited to a series of digital literacy workshops to be held monthly at the William Grundt Memorial Library.
Hosted by the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder in partnership with NBN Local, the program will launch 10am, Wednesday 15 February with a class about Staying Safe Online.
Attendees will learn the essentials of cyber safety, how to create and remember strong passwords, spot common scams like phishing scams, safely download documents including PDF files, as well as how to run and install antivirus software.
The program includes three successive sessions which will education and guide senior residents though using the Cloud, communicating online and understanding apps.
As part of the City’s consultation sessions with seniors and local service providers, as part of the development of the City’s Aged Friendly Strategy, there was interest from the senior community highlighting a need for more educational programs to develop basic computer skills and internet know how.
Deputy Mayor Glenn Wilson said ensuring the outcomes identified as part of the Aged Friendly Strategy were delivered was a priority for the City and this is the first of many planned programs this year.
“It’s fantastic to have heard from the seniors in our community on what activities and services they would like to see in our city, and this area was identified as something many would be interested in participating in.”

The City will be undertaking an upgrade to the William Grundt Memorial Library computer area in the upcoming months, with new computers to be available for public use.
This is in addition to a recent internet speed upgrade, and a new public printing process, seeking to enhance and modernise the facility.
