The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Brien has been recently announced by the McGowan Government as a member of the newly established Advisory Group on Homelessness.
Following an Expression of Interest process, the State Government appointed 17 community and government leaders, including Mr Brien, to the inaugural group who will provide input into implementing the All Paths Lead to a Home: Western Australia's 10-Year Strategy on Homelessness 2020-30.
Mr Brien brings to the Advisory Group, significant knowledge and strategic experience relating to homelessness. During his time as the Chief Executive Officer of the City of Bayswater, Mr Brien collaborated with stakeholders to develop and implement the City’s Homelessness Strategy.
Mr Brien’s experience in both metropolitan and regional local governments has provided him with the necessary understanding, skills, and insight to collaborate with stakeholders to address State-wide homelessness.
He is currently working with local stakeholders on the Summer Response Strategy and is part of the District Leadership Group, who are in regular discussions to help address homelessness issues including rough sleeping across the city.
In collaboration with local stakeholders, service providers, and the City’s Safer Streets team, Mr Brien and his Executive team are developing a Community Safety Strategy which will provide a plan for the City to improve its working partnerships with local service providers and outline solutions for addressing homelessness in our community.
Mayor John Bowler said Mr Brien’s commitment and genuine care in ensuring the safety and well-being of the community is an asset to the State’s Advisory Group.
“Andrew’s appointment is a testament to the work he has already undertaken regarding this important issue, and we are very proud that he was selected amongst the very high-calibre applicants.”
“He will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to this group, and the insight he has offered to our community has already proved invaluable,” said Mayor Bowler.
“Under his guidance, the City has been lobbying for the development of shelter for short-term visitors from the Ngaanyatjarra Lands when they visit Kalgoorlie-Boulder. This facility would provide basic shelter, security, running water, showers, and toilets. It is practical solutions like this that will deliver real outcomes for the homeless community.”
