Last week, the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder welcomed over 200 delegates as the host of the 2021 Sustainable Economic Growth for Regional Australia (SEGRA) National Conference.
SEGRA aims to assist regional, rural and remote Australian communities to identify the techniques, skills and issues they need to address to achieve successful economic growth.
Hosted at the Goldfields Arts Centre and the Central Regional TAFE Conference Centre, the conference program featured speakers from Federal, State, and Local Government; entrepreneurs and founders; company executives and chairs, and key academics.
The three-day conference looked at economic development opportunities for regional Australia, with the theme ‘Unearthing diversification and adapting to a new tomorrow’.
Conference delegates heard keynote addresses regarding future Federal Government opportunities for the regions, renewable energy solutions and technology, the Indigenous business sector, the national Geotourism strategy, the role of modeling and data in regional service delivery, and the role Local Government can play in supporting economic development through industry partnerships.
Local businesses were involved in the conference program, with welcome drinks at the Hannans Club on Monday night and conference catering provided by Drummond Catering, Café 312 and De Bernales.
On the final day of the conference, two concurrent industry tours were offered to showcase the tourism opportunities of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, as well as the current and future industry strengths of the region.
City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder Mayor, John Bowler, said having a focus on regional economic development has never been more important than now.
“As the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder embarks on its’ mission to ensure we are a sustainable regional city of the future, the SEGRA conference provided a valuable forum to discuss economic growth opportunities with representatives from around the country,” said Mayor Bowler.
“The City prides itself on working collaboratively for the benefit of Kalgoorlie-Boulder and the wider Goldfields Region. The national SEGRA conference brought expertise and exposure to Kalgoorlie-Boulder that we are eager to embrace and adopt moving forward to ensure our City remains a leader in regional development.”
