Christmas has come early at the CY O’Connor Men’s Shed with members getting hands on to install golden reindeers and Christmas trees ready for the festive season!
However, their work will continue well beyond the holiday season, with workshop members continually offering support to local sporting groups, schools, families, and even travelers wanting to fix up their cars and caravans.
Led by Men’s Shed Supervisor Brett Hooper and Chairperson Neville Rennie, the Shed continually supports the needs of organisations such as Amana Living who are located next door.
Committee members help to design and build items such as wheelchair accessible sensory stands, giant xylophones, and interactive boards. Most importantly, the space provides a safe social setting for many residents with disabilities.
Brett expressed that the Men’s Shed is not strictly for woodworking and carpentry, explaining that they “consistently have people come in just to play pool or have a chat.” The workshop is a great place to connect with like-minded people in the community and try your hand at something new.
With Brett working in the building and construction industry all of his life and Neville working as a boilermaker for 37 years, these two bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the community workshop.
Located behind the William Grundt Library, the Men’s Shed is open to all genders and those aged over 18 years. City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder residents and visitors are encouraged to sign up to the Shed and enjoy being part of a list of activities including BBQs, card and board games, furniture restoration, toy making, maintenance of machinery, and voluntary community projects.
New members are highly encouraged to sign up and will be inducted into the Men’s Shed and shown how to safely operate all of the machinery. Visit the workshop off Rhodes Street to collect your membership form or call (08) 9021 9859 for more information.
