As part of the WA Government Election Commitment Grant Program, the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder has received a $1 million grant to fund the enhancement of the existing closed-circuit television (CCTV) network and the installation of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology.
The WA Government has approved several Election Commitment Grants through the Small Grant Election Commitments and the Residual Election Commitments. These grants are to advance a significant number of initiatives to improve the lives of Western Australians across the breadth of the State.
The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder CCTV and ANPR Expansion Project will improve the visual surveillance network in key areas within the City confines as well as provide, for the first time, vehicle recognition points around the City.
Sixteen preliminary locations for the CCTV cameras have been agreed upon between the local police and the City. The WA Police Force will provide technical advice relating to the ANPR component of this project.
As the City is one of the first major destinations along the East-West transit route, the ANPR technology will be vital in monitoring vehicles entering Kalgoorlie-Boulder. This is particularly relevant for when interstate travel relaxes as this technology will greatly assist in protecting vulnerable communities and put Kalgoorlie at the forefront for filtering travelers who are entering WA.
Acting CEO Alex Wiese said this project will improve public safety, which not only impacts community members, but also to the many visitors that explore the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder.
“I am glad to be working closely with the WA Police Force to enhance CCTV in the City limits and invest in innovative ANPR technology for the safety and health of our community”, said Mr. Wiese.
“The procurement and ownership of the new ANPR infrastructure will follow the same guidelines as the CCTV network that is owned by the City and will be exclusively accessible by WA Police.”
Member for Kalgoorlie, Ali Kent MLA said she has spoken with many people in the community over the last 18 months and improving community safety is a priority.
“In discussions with the local police, the $1 million election commitment to significantly upgrade the CCTV around the City, will help keep residents and businesses safe,”
“The upgrades to the network will ensure the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder has more eyes on the ground and will provide an additional level of support to local police and authorities in solving any crimes,”
“The additional CCTV and the recognition camera at the entry and exit to our City adds a layer of confidence as we know who is entering and exiting Kalgoorlie,”

The City will be seeking for supply and installation of the infrastructure in the Request for Tender upon its release.
