What is the theme this year?

This year for Art Prize, the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder is excited to announce there is no dedicated theme for the competition. After significant consultation with community art groups, artists, and creative professionals in Kalgoorlie-Boulder the consensus was to trial a year whereby there is no dedicated theme for the competition. Feedback confirmed that by doing so, the completion would attract more artists to enter the competition and provide increased time for artists to plan and create their works.

The 'no theme' offers artists the opportunity to explore a range of concepts without limitations. The City looks forward to receiving some exciting entries in the coming months, and artists can really get creative with this 'no theme' and tailor it to their chosen medium.

Who are the judges this year?

Each year features an original judging panel that is well qualified and experienced in the visual arts. Three judges are chosen who have professional careers in the arts and are well versed in understanding the creative process.

The judges for 2023 will be announced shortly after registrations open.

What are the judges looking for?

A combination of a good idea and the skill to realise it is the key to creating art that engages interest and holds it. It is important to be clear about what you want to say and to know how you are going to approach the subject.

What is the judging process?

The task is very specific and the criteria on which the judging panel decide are clearly articulated. Following an independent assessment of the exhibition, the judges regroup to discuss and a unanimous decision is made on the best works in each category.

The major award winning category takes careful consideration, with all three judges needing to shortlist their top three pieces and making a final decision on a majority vote.

How are the winners notified?

Winners will be announced at the Awards Night, and attendance is by invitation only. Art Prize entrants will receive two tickets per person to attend the Awards Night. All artists are encouraged to attend as the Major Acquisitional Prize is only claimable if the artist or their representative is in attendance (subject to Covid-19 travel restrictions at the time of the Awards Night).
