Solar PV Systems

As part of the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, the City has installed three significant solar photovoltaic (PV) systems on council owned buildings. These systems were installed on sites that consume considerable amounts of electricity and are designed to reduce the City’s overall energy consumption as well as its greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.

In total, the solar PV systems generate approximately 302,000 kWh of electricity every year, equivalent to powering 46 average Australian homes. As of August 2017 the City’s solar PV systems have reimbursed almost $300,000 from electricity being directed back to the grid, demonstrating the long-term economic benefits of using renewable energy. 

Eastern Goldfields Community Centre

  • This system saves approximately 28,000kWh of electricity consumption each year which is the equivalent of the annual electricity usage of 4.3 average homes
  • It also reduces the City’s CO2 emissions by 22 tonnes every year, the equivalent of taking 4 passenger vehicles off the road permanently
  • The City  also saves over $7,000 a year in electricity costs

  • This system saves approximately 52,000kWh of electricity consumption each year which is the equivalent of the annual electricity usage of 7.6 average homes
  • It will also reduce the City’s CO2 emissions by 39 tonnes every year, the equivalent of taking 7 passenger vehicles off the road permanently
  • The City  also saves over $13,000 a year in electricity costs

Goldfields Oasis

As part of the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, the Oasis  has undergone a green energy transformation. With the help of federal and state government funding, a solar PV system and a solar thermal system were installed to provide reliable renewable energy for the Oasis.

  • These systems together offset 8,309 GJ of natural gas and 206,000 kWh of electricity per year that would otherwise be used to warm the pools and heat and cool the centre
  • The savings in natural gas consumption translates to monetary savings of nearly $260,000 a year
  • This will reduce the City's CO2 emissions by over 500 tonnes a year which is the equivalent of offsetting the electricity use of 75 average households, taking 104 passenger vehicles off the road permanently or planting 13,000 trees and growing them for 10 years

The Oasis green energy transformation received funding through the Federal Government's Community Energy Efficiency Program, and the State Government’s Low Energy Emissions Development Fund. 

Wastewater Treatment Plant

In August 2014, the City completed works on the largest council-owned solar PV system in WA. The 150kW system will produce 15% of the wastewater treatment plant's energy requirements and save the City over $60,000 each year in electricity costs.
