The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder will welcome new Youth Councillors, including a Youth Mayor and Deputy Youth Mayor, at Monday night’s Council Meeting.

A total of eight Youth Councillors will be inducted for a one-year term, who have elected Emilee Stewart as Youth Mayor and Erin Winchester as Deputy Youth Mayor.

This year for the first time, the City has prepared a formal induction for the Youth Council, who will be presented with their formal badges and have the opportunity to meet Councillors and City Executives as part of the proceedings.

The Kalgoorlie-Boulder Youth Council (KBYC) is made up of young people aged 12 - 25 years with a passion for making Kalgoorlie-Boulder a great place for young people to live.

Youth Councillors regularly meet to discuss issues facing young people; they provide advice on how to deliver youth services and organise youth events and activities.

Mayor Glenn Wilson said the Youth Council plays a pivotal role in advocating for the youth in our city and he is excited to see the new ideas and initiatives that they will carry out during their term.

“Congratulations to Emilee and Erin on their respective appointments, my fellow Elected Members and I look forward to working with the Youth Council to shape some great outcomes for young people in our community.”

“When we empower young people to have a voice and a part in decision-making, our whole community benefits.”

“Collectively, our Youth Council work together to help solve issues facing young people and provide valued advice on how to deliver youth services.”

“They also put on some fantastic youth events and activities throughout the year, such as Youth Week and the annual Youth Awards. They have also had a significant involvement in the redevelopment of the Youth Precinct.”

Mayor Wilson said it wasn’t too late for other young people to get involved, with applications to become a Youth Councillor open throughout the year.

“The Youth Council can have up to 15 Councillors, so if you’re aged 12-25 and are keen on having a say and making a difference for young people in our City, I encourage you to apply now.”

Members of the public are welcome to attend Council meetings. The Youth Council presentations will take place from 6.45pm, Monday 25 March, at the Kalgoorlie Town Hall Council Chambers.

More information about the Youth Council is available on the City’s website or by calling the City’s Youth Team on 9021 9600.
