Cities Power Partnership

The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder was one of the founding Local Governments to join the Cities Power Partnership (CPP) in July 2017. The CPP is an initiative of the Australian Climate Council that seeks to partner local government in celebrating and accelerating reductions in emissions and clean energy successes. The partnership requires a signatory council to commit to five pledges and report to progress against each pledge twice a year. These pledges are nominated by a local council from a broad range of pledges covering renewable energy, energy efficiency, transport and working together and influence.

The following pledges form part of the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder's commitment to the CPP initiative:

  1. Install renewable energy (solar PV and battery storage) on council buildings for example childcare facilities, libraries, street lighting, recreation centres, sporting grounds and council offices.
  2. Adopt best practice energy efficiency measures across all council buildings, and support community facilities to adopt these measures.
  3. Lobby electricity providers and state government to address barriers to renewable energy take up at the local level (whether these be planning, technical, economic or policy related).
  4. Public lighting can use a large proportion of a city’s energy budget - roll out energy efficient lighting (particularly street lighting) across the municipality.
  5. Promote knowledge sharing and strengthen the local community’s capacity and skills in renewable energy, energy efficiency and sustainable transport.

The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder joined the CPP for a variety of reasons, including the opportunity to network with councils that have similar renewable energy and environmental sustainability aspirations. The City recognises the benefits that come from knowledge sharing and hopes its experience can not only assist others but be further enhanced through increased collaboration with other CPP partners. The City's partners for the initiative are the City of Swan (WA), the Albury City Council (NSW), and the Alice Springs Town Council (NT).
