The transformation of Kalgoorlie’s City Centre will be relaunched today with an event at St Barbara’s Square with the Minister for Regional Development Alannah MacTiernan attending with Cr Brownley, on behalf of the Mayor.
The Minister and Cr Brownley will turn the soil to commemorate the $16million dollar Kal City Centre Project as it moves into the construction phase.
The Kal City Centre Project will reinvigorate the CBD into a vibrant destination for residents and visitors. It will include a complete refurbishment of the St Barbara Square and Laneway to the rear entrance of the City Market arcade.
The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder is excited to be working with the State and Goldfields-Esperance Development Commission on this transformational project.
The project will deliver a children’s water feature, new gardens, areas for alfresco dining and entertainment areas as well as a playground area with bespoke play items. Other features of the Kal City Centre Project include:
- Public art including Aboriginal artwork and installations
- A central stage for entertainment and community events, including a projector for outdoor movies and displays
- Night lighting and CCTV to improve public safety and support the night economy
- New paving, street furniture, shade canopy, gardens and seating areas
City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder Mayor John Bowler said the project was a culmination of several years of consultation with the community and stakeholders.
“It’s fantastic to have the opportunity to commence a project that was inspired by direct feedback from the people who work, play and do business in our city. Their ideas will be brought to life and bring a much needed re-invigoration to our city centre” said Mayor Bowler.
“This project will re-position the Kal City Centre as a safe, welcoming, and thriving place which truly reflects Kalgoorlie’s people and way of life. It will be something that our residents will be proud to visit and will support our retail sector by providing them with a modern place to do business,”
The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder is working closely with the Goldfields-Esperance Development Commission to ensure that Aboriginal Economic Development outcomes in the areas of business procurement, employment and skills/capability building are realised throughout the life of this project.
“I would like to sincerely thank Minister MacTiernan for her passion in ensuring there is a strong focus on involving local Aboriginal businesses and creating employment opportunities for the Aboriginal community through this project,” said Mayor Bowler.
The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development has part funded the project with an $8million contribution, with matching funding from the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder.
