The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder is excited to announce that construction is scheduled to commence in April 2022 on the Kal City Centre project which includes the St Barbara’s Square and the laneway behind the Endowment block.

The intent of the Kal City Centre (KCC) Project is to create an economic transformation in the heart of the Central Business District through regenerated public spaces which will develop numerous attractions, attract investment and improve the livability for residents and visitors.

The City will be delivering a substantial overhaul of the existing public spaces and facilities to create a welcoming space for locals, businesses, visitors and the growing population of Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

The City have completed the preliminary works in the area in preparation for the commencement of the KCC Project, as approved in the Ordinary Council Meeting on Monday 14 March. As part of the planned works, the City will be undertaking a series of upgrades within the Saint Barbara Square precinct. Works will include beautified landscaping and street furniture; new public toilets with a dedicated parent room, Aboriginal art pieces, a bespoke silky pear playground for young children, a stage area and an impressive Superpit water play feature.

City Mayor John Bowler said the project will deliver a redeveloped public space in the heart of the CBD for the community and visitors to once again enjoy.

“The passive open space, complete with a unique children’s playground and water play feature, will bring life back into the heart of Hannan Street and make it a real destination for residents and visitors alike,"

“The project has been a long time coming, but will be worthwhile,” said Mayor Bowler.

From 19 April 2022, the City's contractor will commence fencing off the Saint Barbara’s Square area and lane way area behind the Endowment block. The project will commence with the demolition of current structures within the parameter of the square. Access to shop fronts within Saint Barbara Square will be maintained throughout the project.

The financial agreement with the State Government for the next phase of the Kalgoorlie City Centre Project – Construction Phase is $14 million of which $7 million (ex GST) is funded through the State Government’s Royalties for Regions funding.
