The City is proud to announce that the installation of the Karlkurla Landmark Sculpture
commenced today at the Goldfields Art Centre forecourt.
The sculpture is the outcome of a collaboration between community members, representing the local arts and culture industry and the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, and was first conceptualised at an Arts and Culture Round Table.
The group comprising of community members representing artists and arts and culture organisations, was formed to drive arts and culture initiatives and infrastructure in the city.
Mayor John Bowler said the City was proud to work collaboratively with our arts and culture community to deliver a project that will attract visitors to Kalgoorlie-Boulder.
“The importance of a large-scale public art installation was identified as a priority of the arts and culture community and an Expression of Interest process was opened to source submissions.”
“The Karlkurla Landmark Sculpture was endorsed by Council last year, and it’s wonderful to see the start of this project come to fruition at the Goldfields Arts Centre.”
“There are numerous examples of iconic public art installations around Western Australia which not only attract tourists but also provide a sense of identity for residents.”
“The Karlkurla Landmark Sculpture represents the silky pear, and the tilted installation is the artist’s interpretation of the pear falling from the vine to the ground.”
“What is particularly exciting is that the sculpture will evolve over the next 30 years changing from its current bronze colour to a beautiful green-grey representing a ripening fruit.”
“We thank artist Christian de Vietri, local arts and culture organisations and all who have been involved in supporting this project,” said Mayor Bowler.
The Landmark Sculpture will be complimented with the addition of feature lighting and landscaping, both to be installed over the next few weeks.
The sculpture will be officially unveiled by the Mayor and the Federal Tourism & Trade Minister, Senator the Hon Don Farrell, at the 2023 Perth Airport WA Regional Tourism Conference on Wednesday, 17 May at the Goldfields Art Centre.

Concept
The Karlkurla Landmark Sculpture is made of bronze in the simplified shape of a ‘silky pear’, marsdenia australis.
The concept behind the sculpture is that its surface will be left uncoated, and therefore it will naturally oxidise and gradually change colour from a coppery-gold to grey-green over a period of about 30 years.
It has been carefully installed and secured to the earth so that it appears to be balancing having just touched the ground after falling from above.
When it is first installed it will be like a golden egg, and as time goes by its colour will change like a ripening fruit.
