The recuperative powers of the bush surrounding Kalgoorlie-Boulder will be demonstrated at an unveiling of a plaque this Saturday Morning.
The plaque will delineate the outline of the former Kalgoorlie rifle range, which is located in the middle of the Karlkurla Bushland Park, operated by Kalgoorlie-Boulder Urban Landcare Group (KBULG).
For more than 70 years the 1000-yard range was cleared of bushes and trees.
KBULG CEO Kim Eckert says the regrowth in a relatively short time is spectacular, showing how quickly the Great Western Woodlands can return to all its beauty.
“Mayor John Bowler and I have been wanting to illustrate what can be achieved with the right care and attention, and the unveiling on Saturday will show just that,” says Ms Eckert.
“It is amazing to think that for more than seven decades every bit of growth was cut down on the rifle range, yet now visitors to our park would not recognise the area.”
Mayor Bowler says his father was a captain of the Kalgoorlie Rifle Club and he recalls working bees by members to cut down new trees or pull up bushes, so the 1000-yard range was flat and clear.
There will be two plaques, one at the southwest corner of the range near Karlkurla’s main entrance and the other at the northwest corner where the butts were located at the base of a small hill.
A plaque unveiling will be held at 10.30am at the plaque located at the southern end of the range near the main entrance of Karlkurla Park.
Former members of the Kalgoorlie Rifle Club are traveling from Perth for the occasion.
