Did you know you need permission from the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder to keep more than two pet dogs or two pet cats?
Under the Dog Act 1976 and the City’s Dog Local Law and Cat Local Law, residents are generally limited to a maximum of two dogs and two cats per property. To keep more, you must apply to the City and obtain written approval. This process includes seeking consent from neighbouring properties and a property inspection by Rangers.
The law also states that no more than six dogs over the age of three months can be approved at a property unless it is a licensed kennel establishment. Similar limits apply to cats.
These restrictions do not apply to puppies under three months or kittens under six months, which allows families to trial a new pet before committing. Once they reach that age, however, the animals must be microchipped and registered.
The City encourages responsible pet ownership and asks all residents to apply before adding extra pets to ensure compliance with the law and harmony within the community.
