The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder is celebrating the early success of its partnership with Royal Life Saving WA, following a proactive initiative to improve home pool safety across the community.
In June, Royal Life Saving WA was contracted by the City to conduct a series of home pool barrier inspections to ensure compliance with safety standards and help reduce the risk of drowning incidents. In just three short weeks, the campaign has already seen a marked improvement in compliance and awareness, with dozens of residents making adjustments to help keep children safe around backyard pools.
Royal Life Saving WA inspectors identified the top three reasons why some pool barriers were initially non-compliant:
- Gates not closing properly,
- Minor maintenance required on fences, and
- Climbable objects, such as outdoor furniture or plants, positioned near pool barriers.
“These are relatively simple fixes, but they can have life-saving consequences,” said Travis Doye, Royal Life Saving WA’s General Manager – Safety Services. “We’re incredibly pleased with the community’s response so far and appreciate the efforts of local residents who have taken immediate steps to make their pools safer.”
The initiative is part of a broader effort by the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder to enhance public safety and support families in maintaining safe home environments. The final round of inspections will take place starting Monday, 28 July, and the City urges all residents who have been contacted but not yet booked their assessment to do so as soon as possible.
“Swimming pools are a fantastic part of life in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, but safety must always come first,” said Andrew Brien, City of Kalgoorlie Boulder CEO. “This partnership with Royal Life Saving WA is an important step toward ensuring that every pool meets the highest safety standards.”
