The Kalgoorlie City Centre Project is one step closer to construction following Council endorsement of the schematic designs and cost estimates for the development at last night’s Ordinary Council Meeting.
Expanding on the community endorsed themes of a Handbuilt City, (re)Discovery and Catalyse, the schematic designs are the final creative and spatial templates underpinning the $16million project.
The City expects the project to go to tender in August 2020 for the transformation of three key spaces within the Kalgoorlie City Centre, with construction planned to be underway by January 2021.
City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder CEO John Walker said the project would act as a catalyst for a significant economic transformation of the central precinct of Hannan Street, focusing on St Barbara’s Square, the laneway between the Endowment Block and the link through to the Coles and Kmart precinct through the Market Arcade.
“We have been working towards this for a number of years, and we are thrilled to have a design that responds to the unique natural, cultural, historical and economic qualities of Kalgoorlie-Boulder,” Mr Walker said.
“The designs include kids play areas, including water play, public art, alfresco dining spaces, and great new facilities for everyday life and special events, including a parents’ room and fully accessible showers and change facilities.
“With the final design now complete we can begin to look at the practical implementation of the Project. In the lead up to, and during the construction phase, we will be engaging with and supporting local businesses, as well as making sure the community is informed about the construction works be taking place.
“The Kal City Centre Project is about more than making the Kalgoorlie CBD look a bit nicer. It’s about uniting community and commerce, and building on Kalgoorlie’s people and potential to ensure the public realm pulses with the energy of a strong region.”
