The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder has awarded the detailed design contract for the transformation of Kalgoorlie’s City Centre to Aspect Studios Pty Ltd.
The appointment of the design firm brings the $16 million project one step closer to fruition by converting precinct concepts into detailed designs, which in turn will lead to the preparation of construction documentation.
City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder CEO John Walker said the City was excited to be partnering with one of Australia’s foremost design companies for this stage of the project.
“We’ve been on a long journey to reach this point, through extensive public consultation and State Government negotiations, to a nation-wide hunt for the best company to design the space,” he said.
“Aspect Studios is an internationally awarded design firm with a reputation for delivering excellence in landscape architecture and sustainable urban design.
“Their projects include the likes of Perth’s Yagan Square and Sydney’s Barangaroo South, and their carefully selected team of creative and technical professionals will bring the community’s ideas for our City Centre to life.”
Aspect Studios’ Perth Studio Director Tom Griffiths said the project would create a new civic heart and community space on one of Australia’s most iconic streets.
“The project is a wonderful opportunity to create an inclusive civic space and focal point for the community to meet, gather and experience a rich array of events and activities throughout the year,” he said.
“Through our design process we will seek to develop a project that reflects the City’s unique character, look at what makes a great public space and build on the ideas developed by the community through the consultation process.
“We will work closely with stakeholders to develop an innovative and sustainable project that will activate the public realm and facilitate future investment in the city centre.”
Mr Walker said the City was working closely with the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development to ensure their $8 million investment in the project-leveraged opportunities for Aboriginal economic development.
“We will develop a specific Aboriginal Procurement and Employment Plan that builds on the extensive work already undertaken by the City to build capability and drive new economic opportunities for local people,” he said.
“This project embodies the need for genuine collaboration and a clear cultural positioning for the City Centre, built on authentic stakeholder engagement.”
The detailed design work comprises of seven stages, and is estimated to take nine months.
The project construction tender is anticipated to be released in late 2020, with construction due to commence in early 2021.
