The City is pleased to announce Kalgoorlie Golf Course Apprentice Jayden Zappelli was awarded the Australian Golf Course, Graduate of the Year Award, at the Australian Sports Turf Managers Association (ASTMA) National Turf Industry Awards event in Adelaide on
Monday night.

Jayden was amongst six state finalists for the prestigious industry award, who faced a rigorous judging process including a presentation to the judging panel about their time in the sports turf industry, their commitment to work, achievements, and their future aspirations.

Finalists were also quizzed by the judging panel on a series of technical and general questions to ascertain their level of knowledge and proficiency.

This national recognition comes after receiving the Best Block Release Apprentice Award at the WA Turf Awards earlier this year, alongside fellow Kalgoorlie Golf Course Graduate Zac Naake who was awarded the Lecturer’s Choice Apprentice Award.

City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder CEO Andrew Brien said Jayden’s Award win is a testament to the dedication he has shown to the profession over the years.

“Jayden started with the City as a 15-year-old turf work experience student. His passion for this industry has been evident since this time and has not waivered.”

“He has an outstanding work ethic and is always eager to learn and develop his skills. He is passionate about what he does and an asset to have on our turf management team at the golf course.”

“The team are out there with the sunrise each day, making sure our course is maintained to international quality standards, which is a testament to the skills and talent of our staff.”

“In congratulate Jayden on this achievement and I have no doubt he will excel in this industry for many years to come,” said Mr Brien.

“We are very proud of our trainee and apprenticeship program and the opportunity to support talented young people in our community to excel in their chosen profession.”

Jeff Austen, Senior Turf Lecturer at South Metropolitan TAFE said Jayden is a keen young man and a pleasure to have in class.

“His practical and theoretical skills and knowledge are fantastic. I am looking forward to him graduating next year and becoming a qualified Greenkeeper.”

Jayden said it means a lot to him to be recognised in this way.

“It feels pretty good to be recognised for my skills and accomplishments. I feel proud of myself and the work our team does out at the Kalgoorlie Golf Course.”

“The best part of my job is working under the sunrise every day and with a fantastic crew. I’m grateful for the mentoring I receive.”

“I hope to continue working in this industry for many years and working my way up the
ranks.”

Jayden thanked his many mentors particularly current Acting Superintendent Niall Rogan and former Kalgoorlie Golf Course Superintendent Patrick Casey.
