Portrait Workshop with Mellen Burns

A full-day photography and mixed-media workshop with Artist in Residency Mellen Burns.
In the morning, participants learn some simple approaches to portrait photography, including lighting, backgrounds, composition and how different choices can change a portrait. Everyone works together to photograph and be photographed, experimenting with different ways of representing themselves.We then break for lunch while a selection of the photographs are printed. In the afternoon, everyone works back into their printed portraits using paint, drawing, collage, cutting, tearing, text and other art materials. The idea is to treat the photograph as a starting point rather than a finished object and spend the afternoon experimenting with it.
Participants leave with their photographs and the works they’ve created during the day.
