The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder has celebrated the creativity, imagination and talent of local young artists at the 2026 Junior Art Prize Award opening, held at the Goldfields Arts Centre on Saturday.

The much-loved annual event showcases the artistic talents of children aged 4 to 12, with this year’s theme, My Dream Toy, inspiring a colourful and imaginative collection of artworks from young creatives across the community.

Families also enjoyed a range of free activities throughout the event, including craft sessions with Super Sarah, roving entertainment from Acrobatch, a Transformers show, interactive photo booths and the Squishy Café.

Mayor Glenn Wilson said the Junior Art Prize continues to be a highlight for families and a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the creativity of local children.

“Walking through the exhibition and seeing these artworks on display is something really special,” Mayor Wilson said.

“This year’s theme, My Dream Toy, sparked so many creative ideas, and it was fantastic to see the imagination and personality that each child brought to their work.”

“What stands out most is the confidence these young artists show in expressing themselves through art, with each entry a real reminder of just how incredible kids’ imaginations are.”

“I want every kid who entered to feel incredibly proud of what they created. Putting your artwork out there takes courage, and these young artists absolutely deserve to be celebrated.”

Mayor Wilson also thanked the families, teachers and community members who have each contributed in making the exhibition a success.

“Behind every young artist is a great support crew; parents, carers, grandparents and teachers who encourage that creativity every day, whether it’s at home or in the classroom,” he said.

“The City is proud to host this annual exhibition creating not only a fun but also welcoming space for our community to celebrate young talent.”

The highlight of the opening was the official awards presentation, with a total of nine honourable mentions and First, Second and Third prizes awarded across three age groups.

The exhibition will remain open to the public at the Goldfields Arts Centre from Monday 25 May to Saturday 27 June. Viewing hours are weekdays from 10am to 5pm and Saturdays from 10am to 1pm. Entry is free.
