Christmas Comes to the Streets with New Community Art Competition

The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder is inviting the community to help bring festive cheer to our main streets this Christmas, with the launch of its first-ever Christmas Street Banner Art Competition.

Open to residents of all ages, including local schools and students, the competition encourages participants to create colourful artwork inspired by the theme Christmas and the Festive Season.

Selected designs will be transformed into Street Banners and displayed along Hannan and Burt Streets during November and December 2026, giving artists the chance to see their work on display while adding to the festive cheer of our city. Each selected artist will receive a $200 in Kal Dollar Voucher.

Mayor Glenn Wilson said the competition was a new and exciting way for the community to leave its mark on the city and celebrate the festive season together.

“This is the first time we’ve run a competition like this, and we’d love to see as many people as possible get involved,” Mayor Wilson said.

“Imagine walking down Burt Street at Christmas and seeing your artwork, or your child’s artwork, proudly displayed for the whole community to enjoy. I know I’d be super proud to see my kid’s artwork up there, and during events like the Lighting of the Christmas Tree and St Barbara’s Festival. It's a pretty special opportunity.”

“Christmas is a time when people come together, and this competition is all about celebrating our community, our creativity and the festive spirit that makes this time of year so enjoyable.”

“You don’t need to be a professional artist. Whether it’s a detailed illustration, a painted masterpiece or a simple festive design, this is all about having fun and sharing what Christmas means to you.”

“So don’t overthink it - grab the pencils, paints or markers, get creative and give it a go. I’d love to see families, schools, community groups and individuals get involved, because the more people who take part, the more these banners will reflect the spirit and personality of Kalgoorlie-Boulder.”

Artwork templates can be downloaded from Your Say CKB or collected from the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder Administration Building, Goldfields Arts Centre, the William Grundt Memorial Library or Goldfields Oasis.

Entries open on Wednesday, 1 July 2026 and close at 3pm on Monday, 31 August 2026. Completed artworks can be submitted in person at designated City facilities.
