The City acknowledges it should have spoken with local residents, families and the young people using Davidson Gardens before undertaking works at the reserve.
We recognise that over time, the community-built bike jumps and tracks had become a popular place for local kids to ride their bikes, get outdoors and spend time with their friends.
It’s clear from the response received that the space meant a lot to the people using it and to families living nearby. Seeing kids outside, being active and making use of their neighbourhood is something we want to support.
The City made the decision to undertake works at the reserve after receiving a range of complaints and as part of our responsibility to address the issues raised.
However, we recognise that our approach to the situation could have been better and we should have spoken to people first. We didn’t, and we got that part wrong.
Talking with nearby residents and the people using the space would have helped us better understand what the space had become for the neighbourhood and whether there were other options available.
Instead, the works happened without the community having an opportunity to be part of that discussion.
The feedback from the community has been heard clearly. At this stage, the City will not be undertaking any further works at Davidson Gardens and will take time to consider the lessons from this experience.
More broadly, the response has highlighted the importance of providing places for young people to ride, be active and spend time together. Through projects such as the proposed Kalgoorlie-Boulder Mountain Bike Trail, we remain committed to creating opportunities for local riders and ensuring their voices are part of future planning.
