The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder is proud to announce that Goldfields Oasis Recreation Centre Lifeguard, Miriam Ohuma, has been awarded the 2025 Pool Lifeguard of the Year at the WA Aquatic Recreation Industry Awards.
The award, presented by Leisure Institute of Western Australia (LIWA), celebrates lifeguards who excel in customer service, technical skills, leadership, and safety, and overall while making a lasting contribution to their facility and community.
Since joining the Oasis team in 2023, Miriam has become a valued and respected member of the team. She combines skill, vigilance, and compassion to keep swimmers safe and create a welcoming atmosphere for all. Known for her calm presence and approachable nature, she is trusted by patrons and admired by her colleagues.
Her professionalism is matched by her lifesaving ability, in the past year alone, Miriam has performed seven rescues. In one standout moment, she spotted a child struggling more than 100 metres away while cleaning the pool deck. Without hesitation, she acted within seconds, calmly bringing the child to safety and averting a potential tragedy.
Beyond her core duties, Miriam is a passionate advocate for water safety. She actively promotes the Watch Around Water policy, teaches swimming lessons to patrons, and mentors young people through the Royal Life Saving WA Talent Pool program. She also undertakes ongoing training, including de-escalation skills, to further strengthen her ability to keep the community safe.
City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder CEO Andrew Brien said this recognition is a testament to Miriam’s work ethic and a proud moment for the City.
“Miriam’s commitment to keeping people safe goes well beyond the pool deck. She not only protects lives but also builds confidence in those around her, whether that’s a child learning to swim, parents who engage with our programs at the Goldfields Oasis or her colleagues.”
“Her quick thinking and skill has saved lives, and her kindness leaves a lasting impression on everyone she meets. Miriam truly represents the values of our organisation and what it means to serve our community,” he said.
Mr Brien also congratulated Oasis staff members Atefeh Mahboob and Meg Cusick, who were nominated for Aquatic Technical Operator of the Year and the Emerging Leader Award respectively.
“These nominations highlight the depth of talent and dedication within the Goldfields Oasis team. We’re pleased to have such passionate, capable people working to make the largest recreational centre in our region a welcoming place for all.”
“On behalf of the City, I congratulate Miriam, Atefeh, and Meg on this well-deserved recognition and thank them for their ongoing commitment to our community,” he said.
