The City of Kalgoorlie‑Boulder has been re‑endorsed as a Waterwise Council for the 12th consecutive year, reinforcing its long‑standing commitment to sustainable water management in the Goldfields.

The Waterwise Council Program, delivered by Water Corporation in partnership with the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, recognises local governments that actively reduce water use, promote efficiency within their communities, and embed water-sensitive practices across operations and infrastructure.

Mayor Glenn Wilson said the City has continued to strengthen its waterwise practices since first joining the program in 2014.

“We’ve proudly maintained our Waterwise Council status every year since signing on, and that long‑term commitment was recognised in 2024 when the City received Water Corporation’s 10‑Year Waterwise Council Award,” Mayor Wilson said.

“Living in the Goldfields, we understand how valuable water is. Every action we take to save water, reuse it and manage it efficiently makes a difference to the liveability of our city.”

During 2024–25, the City reduced its overall potable water consumption while increasing its use of non‑potable sources, including recycled water for irrigating parks and sporting ovals.

Key initiatives delivered throughout the year included irrigation system audits, leak detection and repairs, staff training and Waterwise workshops, installation of recycled water signage at parks and ovals, ongoing work as part of the Water Bank Project, and the installation of water‑saving fittings across City facilities.

Over time, the City has implemented a range of practical water‑saving measures, including the use of treated effluent to irrigate parks, reserves, gardens and the golf course, improved irrigation scheduling in areas still using scheme water, proactive leak detection and repair, installation of waterless urinals, and upgrades to water-efficient fixtures.

Mayor Wilson said the re-endorsement highlights the City’s sustained and strategic approach to water management.

“This recognition reflects the strong systems and practices we’ve put in place over many years, but more importantly, it sets the foundation for what comes next,” he said.

“We’re focused on continuing to innovate, expand our use of alternative water sources, and work alongside our community to ensure Kalgoorlie-Boulder remains resilient and waterwise well into the future.”

The City is now focused on building on this progress as it works towards achieving Gold Waterwise Council status.
