The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder is honoured to announce the generous donation of the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial located at Centennial Park by the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Vietnam Veterans.
Several Vietnam Veterans embarked on constructing the memorial several years ago which is dedicated to honouring all Vietnam Veterans.
The community rallied behind this cause, providing significant donations that allowed the successful completion of the project in August 2009.
After the project's completion, the Vietnam Veterans Association wrapped up its operations, entrusting the Goldfields-Esperance Community Trust with the remaining funds intended for the memorial's ongoing maintenance and care.
Kalgoorlie-Boulder Vietnam Veteran, Jeff Daley said that the passage of time has caught up with the Vietnam Veterans and they have found themselves unable to personally attend to the memorial's weekly upkeep and contractor management.
"While we will continue to hold memorial days at the site, the maintenance of the asset has become challenging for us due to our advancing age," said Mr Daley.
"It has always been our intention to donate the Vietnam Memorial to the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder and now is the right time.”
“We believe that the City is best equipped to ensure the memorial's continued care and accessibility to the community."
Mayor John Bowler, said the donation and trust in the City to maintain such an important community asset was an honour and that it will be well maintained.
“We greatly appreciate this invaluable donation and the trust placed in the City to safeguard the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial.”
"We thank the Vietnam Veterans who have put in so much time and effort to maintain the memorial over the years and we are committed to continuing their work.”
“The Memorial stands in honour of the sacrifices made by Vietnam Veterans and will continue to serve as a place of remembrance for generations to come,” said Mayor Bowler.
