More than 60 student leaders from across the Goldfields gathered at the historic Kalgoorlie Town Hall this week for the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s Student Leaders Day, learning more about local government and community leadership.

Held on Wednesday, 17 June 2026, the event brought together students from Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Kambalda and Coolgardie, and explored how local government works and the important role young people can play in their communities.

Throughout the day, students participated in interactive sessions exploring the role of Council, local decision-making processes and the qualities of effective leadership beyond the school environment. They also learned about opportunities to become involved in community initiatives, including the City's Youth Council.

Students were also treated to a guided tour of the Kalgoorlie Town Hall, where they learned about the building's rich history and its significance to the Goldfields region.

Mayor Glenn Wilson said the event was a fantastic opportunity to connect with the next generation of leaders and encourage them to think about how they can make a positive contribution to their community.

“It was a pleasure to speak with and help guide some of our student leaders here in our community,” Mayor Wilson said.

“This idea came about through a conversation with Kalgoorlie Primary School Principal Ash Ferguson, who was looking for ways to give student leaders a broader understanding of leadership beyond the classroom.

“We held the event for the first time last year, and we’re pleased to once again create opportunities like this.

“Hopefully, the students walked away with a better understanding of how decisions are made locally, and how they can have a voice in their community.

“It was also fitting to host the event in the Kalgoorlie Town Hall on the 133rd anniversary of Paddy Hannan’s discovery of gold. The Town Hall has played an important role in our community’s story, and it was wonderful to share that history with the leaders of tomorrow.”

Councillors Kirsty Dellar and Carla Viskovich also attended the event, sharing their leadership experiences and engaging with students throughout the day.
