The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder has taken an important step towards shaping the future of the city with the inaugural meeting of the City Activation Working Group, held this week at the historic Kalgoorlie Town Hall.

Chaired by Mayor Glenn Wilson, the Working Group brings together senior leaders from government, industry, education, Traditional Owner groups, and the community sector to drive a collaborative, city-wide approach to revitalisation and growth across the city. Their focus is on re-energising the Kalgoorlie and Boulder CBDs, the airport precinct, and community spaces to make the city more vibrant, liveable, and welcoming.

Mayor Wilson said the meeting marked a significant milestone in the City’s activation efforts and represented a unified effort to bring important and valuable ideas to life.

“Kalgoorlie-Boulder has an incredible history and an even brighter future. By bringing key decision-makers and community leaders together in one room, we’re setting the foundations for projects that will transform how people experience our city every day,” Mayor Wilson said.

He added that the group’s role is about building more than just infrastructure.

“Activation is about creating places people want to spend time in, from thriving main streets to lively public spaces where families, businesses, and visitors feel welcome. By working together, we’re building a city we’re proud of today and one that will remain a regional hub for generations to come.”

The Working Group’s efforts will be supported by $2.14 million in Federal Government funding under the Regional Precincts and Partnerships Program (RPPP), which will deliver a city-wide a city-wide Precinct Plan. This funding will enable the Working Group to pursue a long-term, strategic vision and framework for activation, underpinned by collaboration between government, industry, and the community.

At the first meeting, members identified shared priorities including:

  • The importance of revitalising central precincts and community spaces.
  • Ensuring housing, services, and infrastructure support a growing residential workforce.
  • Strengthening cultural, recreational, and educational opportunities.
  • Building on existing community and industry investment to enhance liveability and city pride.

The Working Group will meet quarterly, with its next meeting scheduled for November 2025. An independent chair and consultant will be appointed to guide its work program, including consultation and identification of priority projects.

Mayor Wilson emphasised that the group’s work would extend

“Activation is about more than just bricks and mortar – it’s about creating a city where people want to live, work, and belong. This is about setting a positive vision for Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s future and turning that vision into action.”

The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder will provide further updates as the Working Group progresses.
