Junior Art Prize Returns For 2026

The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder is again inviting local children to pick up their pencils, paints and pastels, with registrations now open for the 2026 Junior Art Prize.

Open to children aged 4 to 12 years, this year’s theme, “My Dream Toy,” encourages young artists to let their imaginations take the lead. Whether it’s a magical creature, a robot best friend, a high-tech invention or something wonderfully unexpected, this is their chance to dream it up and bring it to life.

Mayor Glenn Wilson said the Junior Art Prize, now in its fourth year, has become a much-loved event on the City’s calendar.

“Every year, we’re genuinely amazed by the ideas our local kids come up with. Their creativity is bold, honest and full of personality,” Mayor Wilson said.

“As a parent, I know how proud children feel when they create something and see it displayed for others to enjoy. For many of them, this is their first experience exhibiting in a gallery setting, and that’s something pretty special.”

“The exhibition is always a highlight. I’d encourage parents, teachers and community groups to support their young people to enter, talk through their ideas with them, and come along to celebrate their work.”

Registrations and artwork submissions close on Friday, 15 May 2026. Winners will be announced at an Awards Afternoon on Saturday, 23 May 2026. Entry is free.

All submitted artworks will be featured in a public exhibition running from Monday, 25 May to Saturday, 27 June 2026. The exhibition will be open weekdays from 10am to 5pm and Saturdays from 10am to 1pm (excluding Sundays and public holidays). Artwork collection will take place from Monday, 29 June to Saturday, 4 July during the same opening hours.

Prizes will be awarded across three age categories:

  • 4 - 6 years
  • 7 - 9 years
  • 10 - 12 years

Entries will be judged on how well they reflect the theme, the creativity of the concept and the originality of the work.

For more information or to register, visit the City’s website or contact the City on 9021 9600.
