The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder is celebrating the success of one of its own, with Leading Hand Irrigation, Greg Sbizzirri, being awarded a Local Government Works Association WA Scholarship at the association’s recent annual conference in Perth.

Greg was recognised for his leadership, technical expertise, dedication to his role, and his volunteer contributions to the wider community. As part of the scholarship, he will receive complimentary attendance at next year’s national conference.

City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder CEO, Andrew Brien, said the award honored the outstanding work of Mr Sbizzirri.

“Greg is the City’s go-to man - our ‘Mr Fix-It’ - with a reputation for diagnosing and repairing just about anything. His leadership skills, technical knowledge, and willingness to step up for his team make him an outstanding role model. This scholarship is a well-deserved acknowledgment of his commitment to his work and the community,” Mr Brien said.

Since joining the City eight years ago as a street sweeper, Greg has steadily progressed into leadership roles, most recently as a Leading Hand Irrigation. Today, he manages a team of four, overseeing the maintenance of irrigation systems across 62 parks, 50 gardens, and 15 sports grounds.

Greg’s versatility has also seen him step into acting roles as Parks Supervisor, Irrigation Supervisor, and Reserves Supervisor, leading teams of up to 23 staff. Beyond work, he is a dedicated family man and an active volunteer, often seen helping with his son’s Mines Rovers Football Club as an umpire and scorer.

Mr Brien said Greg’s story highlights the career opportunities available in local government.

“Greg started with us in an entry-level role and has built an incredible career through hard work, initiative, and a positive attitude. His journey shows that with the right mindset, there are endless opportunities to grow and succeed in local government.”

“On behalf of the City, I congratulate Greg on this well-deserved recognition,” he said.
