Why Water Efficiency Matters in Kalgoorlie-Boulder
Did you know a single dripping tap can waste thousands of litres of water every year?
In a dry outback environment like Kalgoorlie-Boulder, small fixes and smarter habits can make a big difference - to your bills, your garden, and our community’s long-term water security.
Living in a low‑rainfall region means water efficiency plays a crucial role in our liveability, resilience and long‑term sustainability. Using water wisely helps reduce pressure on infrastructure, supports a reliable supply and ensures our parks, ovals and community spaces remain welcoming, even in challenging conditions.
The City is committed to responsible water management and supporting residents with practical ways to save water at home.
How we’re building a Waterwise Kalgoorlie-Boulder
Water efficiency is embedded across the City’s planning, operations and asset management. This includes how we design new spaces and how we maintain the facilities our community relies on every day.
Showerhead Swap Program
A key City-led initiative is the Showerhead Swap Program, delivered in partnership with Water Corporation. Through this program, residents can swap up to two water-inefficient showerheads per household for WELS 4-star rated models.
Showers can account for up to 24% of household water use, and switching to efficient showerheads can save around 20,000 litres per year. The program is available until 31 May 2026.
Sustainable Living Series
A community workshop series supporting residents in sustainable habits - from reducing waste to waterwise gardening. The next workshop will be held in early 2026.
Household Organic Recycling Program
Launched in April 2023, this program helps divert food and organic waste from landfill. The resulting compost improves soil quality and boosts moisture retention, reducing the need for frequent garden watering at home.
Recognised as a Waterwise Council
In 2024, the City was honoured by Water Corporation for achieving 10 consecutive years as a Waterwise Council.
Through the broader Waterwise Towns Program, participating regional communities have collectively saved 227 million litres of drinking water across WA.
Kalgoorlie-Boulder Water Bank Project
The City is actively pursuing funding for this multi-phase initiative to enhance the storage and reuse of non-potable water.
The project includes:
- Upgrades to the South Boulder Wastewater Treatment Plant
- Installation of evaporative controls on selected dams and basins
- Construction of a new recycled water dam at the Racecourse Dam site
Together, these upgrades enhance long-term water resilience and reduce reliance on potable water supplies.
Between 2020 and 2023, the City invested $12.2 million in wastewater infrastructure upgrades, reinforcing a long-term commitment to water system reliability.
Water-Saving Tips for Home and Garden
Small daily habits can collectively save thousands of litres each year.
Try these waterwise actions:
- Fix leaks promptly, both inside and outside the home
- Water gardens early in the morning or after 6pm to reduce evaporation
- Check soil moisture before watering to avoid over-watering
- Use mulch to retain moisture in garden beds
- Follow the Water Corporation ‘s rostered watering days
- Adjust sprinkler run times and turn systems off during rain
Inside the home, use water-efficient appliances, choose half-flush options, wash full loads and turn taps off when brushing your teeth.
