Local artist Monique Townes has taken home the $1,000 People’s Choice Award in the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s 2026 Art Prize for her mixed media artwork, Seaside serenity.

Monique’s coastal-inspired piece was voted the public’s favourite from 152 artist entries across the Goldfields, Perth and interstate, with 200 votes cast in total.

The exhibition was held at the Goldfields Arts Centre from 12 September to 16 October, showcasing a diverse range of artistic talent.

Combining resin, acrylic paint, natural sand, shells and handcrafted clay details, Seaside serenity captures a peaceful moment at the shoreline. Its layered textures and natural elements evoke the beauty of the ocean and the memories and sense of calm it can bring.

Mayor Glenn Wilson congratulated Monique on the win and thanked everyone who took the time to visit the exhibition and vote.

“The People’s Choice Award is always special because it comes directly from the public. Congratulations to Monique on creating a piece that resonated with people,” he said.

“It’s great to see a local artist receive this recognition from the community.

“The Art Prize has been part of Kalgoorlie-Boulder for many years, giving local artists a chance to share their work alongside artists from further afield. It also gives our community the chance to experience a wide range of art right here at home.

“Thank you to all the artists who entered and everyone who came along to see the exhibition and cast a vote. It’s great to see so much support for the arts in our community.”

More information about the 2026 Art Prize winners is available on the City's website.
