A remarkable piece of local history has found a permanent home in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, with naval veteran Ken Needham officially donating his personal collection to the Goldfields War Museum
The collection, which includes Royal Australian Navy uniforms, photographs and historical documents, reflects more than two decades of military service and offers a unique insight into a life spent serving Australia at home and overseas.
Deputy Mayor Terrence Winner joined Ken, family, friends and invited guests at Boulder Town Hall for the formal handover ceremony, recognising both Ken's distinguished naval career and his generosity in ensuring these important items remain accessible to future generations.
Born in Kalgoorlie, Ken joined the Royal Australian Navy as a young man and went on to serve aboard several vessels, including HMAS Derwent and HMAS Hobart during the Vietnam War. His naval service also included officer training at Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, England, along with service with both the Royal Navy and Royal New Zealand Navy.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Mayor Winner thanked Ken for sharing an important part of his life with the community.
"Ken's story reflects dedication, service and a commitment to serving wherever he was needed.
"By donating this collection, he has ensured future generations will have the opportunity to learn more about the experiences of local people who have served our nation."
The timing of the donation was particularly significant, taking place on the eve of Vietnam Veterans' Day, which is commemorated annually on 18 August.
Today, Ken lives in Kalgoorlie and continues to share his love of music, regularly entertaining residents at local nursing homes with his guitar.
The donation will now form part of the Goldfields War Museum's holdings, helping preserve and share an important chapter of Kalgoorlie-Boulder's history for years to come.
We extend a heartfelt thank you to Ken for his service and generosity and for entrusting this significant collection to our community.
