Over 10,000 people turned out on Saturday, 6 June, for this year’s Multicultural Festival, and what a night it was.
The Kalgoorlie-Boulder Arts Centre precinct was buzzing from start to finish, filled with colour, music, dancing, incredible food and, most importantly, people coming together to celebrate the many cultures that make up our community.
There was something around every corner, with 16 market stalls featuring local community groups, multicultural organisations, homemade goods and the City’s Youth Council. It was a chance to meet new people, learn something different and connect with the stories and traditions that help shape Kalgoorlie-Boulder.
And when it came to food, no one went home hungry. With 27 food stalls serving flavours from around the world. Whether you were trying something completely new or lining up for a favourite dish, there was no shortage of options. From African and Indonesian cuisine to Italian, Indian, New Zealand, Spanish and much more.
The Cultural Village was once again a popular part of the event, giving visitors the chance to learn about different traditions and cultures directly from the people who live and share them every day.
Families enjoyed a packed program of activities throughout the afternoon and evening, including face painting, henna tattoos, cultural displays, interactive experiences and roving entertainment.
On the main stage, the crowd was treated to a vibrant line-up of performances from Filipino dancers, Papua New Guinean performers, Nepalese dancers and the Kalgoorlie Dance and Cheer Academy, with each performance bringing something unique to the celebration.
A standout on the night was the Chinese Martial Arts and Lion Dance Association, who travelled from Perth to be part of the festival. Their vibrant lion dances and martial arts demonstrations captivated the crowd, filling the precinct with energy, colour and excitement. Adding to the experience, children were given traditional red envelopes and invited to ‘feed’ them to the lions during the performance - a much-loved tradition that created plenty of smiles on the night.
A big thank you to Lotterywest and Northern Star Resources, funding partners of the event, as well as all the volunteers, performers, community groups, stallholders and everyone who came along. Events like this simply wouldn't happen without the people who give their time, share their culture and help create such a welcoming atmosphere.
The Multicultural Festival is one of those events that reminds us what makes Kalgoorlie-Boulder such a special place to live. It's a chance to celebrate our differences, discover something new and come together as one community. Judging by the smiles, conversations and full food queues throughout the night, it's clear this year's festival did exactly that.
