It is that time of year again that the City Council considers the next inductees into the Walk of Fame, while later this month the next two sporting champions will be unveiled for the Goldfields Sporting Hall of Fame.
I’ve been Chairman of the Sporting Hall of Fame since its inception and as Mayor I chair the Walk of Fame selection committee.
The committee members have their own thoughts on who should be considered but we also appreciate the views of local residents who may bring forward a worthy candidate. One such a person was C.Y.O’Connor, who was given a plaque in Hannan Street after local resident Joan Gray campaigned for his inclusion.
The Walk of Fame honours our civic and community heroes – those who have made our City and the world a better place for their endeavours.
We are always after new nominations; you may have a distant relative or even a friend who you believe should be honoured. Contact the City’s offices and get their name in so they can be considered.
The same goes for the other side of the street; we are always after new nominations for the Sporting Hall of Fame.
Over the years the committee, including myself, Brian Osmetti, John Terrell, Norma French and Neale Harvey has had a hard job – not so much of who to select – but who to leave out till the next round, such has been the quality of our sporting champions for more than a century.
With a long backlog to work through we aim to make one of the inductees a posthumous award and the other to be there in person on the night.
This year’s event will be held in conjunction with the Goldfields Sports Star of the Year awards at the Kalgoorlie Town Hall on Friday, November 26. If you know a nominee for the various categories – Sports Star, Rising Star, Services to Sport, Seniors, Club and Disability – come along, because it truly is the best night in Kalgoorlie-Boulder each year.
Meanwhile, the new footpaths in Hannan Street have given the City an opportunity to relay the plaques on both sides of the street.
On the north side the Goldfields Sporting Hall of Fame has seen all but two plaques lifted so that when they are re-laid, they will be in chronological order. The only two plaques to remain will be the first inductee outside the town hall – that of legendary billiards champion Walter Lindrum – and that of clay shooter Bill Montgomery, whose plaque will remain outside Montys shop on the corner of Porter Street.
