Public urged to donate items to keep residents warm this winter

Mayor John Bowler is encouraging residents to dig deep and donate items for this year’s Winter Warmth Appeal/.

“This week’s cold snap has highlighted the importance and need for the annual Mayor’s Blanket Appeal, which this year has been renamed the Winter Warmth Appeal,” he said.

This year’s Appeal has seen increased donations with the Mayor and working group members distributing blankets and items of warm clothing as soon as they were donated.

“So far this year we have had 103 blankets, 27 jackets, 30 scarfs and over 100 beanies donated, which for the start of winter is better than previous appeals,” said Mayor Bowler.

“There have also been donations of pillows, doonas and warm clothing including socks and slippers.

“We have an energetic committee this year, led by the amazing Esther Roadnight.”

“Our aim is that no person in Kalgoorlie-Boulder should be cold this winter.”

Mayor Bowler said most people moving to the Goldfields for work anticipated hot summers but were ill-prepared for the cold winters, and that was where donations to the Appeal could tide them over until they were able to look after themselves.

“What has been especially humbling this year was the volunteer work of female inmates at the Eastern Goldfields Regional Prison where they have been busy knitting with donations of wool quickly converted into blankets and items of warm clothing.”

Mayor Bowler said as well as donations of money to buy blankets and wool, many residents were having cleanouts of balls of old wool.

He also encouraged local mining and service companies who have unwanted jackets and jumpers to consider donating them to keep someone warm this winter.

Monetary donations for the purchase of blankets and wool can be made to the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder (Trust). BSB 086-712. Account 93-850-8921 and reference Mayor’s
Winter Appeal.

Donations of blankets and other winter accessories (in good used condition) can be dropped off to the Eastern Goldfields Community Centre, Boulder Town Hall, City Administration Building, Church of Christ, or the Salvation Army on Brookman Street, Kalgoorlie.
