Six local heroes were recognised for their outstanding professionalism and courage at a special Royal Life Saving WA Bravery Awards presentation at the Goldfields Oasis Recreation Centre on Wednesday 7 May.
The awards honour lifeguards who demonstrated extraordinary composure, teamwork, and life-saving skills during a critical incident involving a young child at the Centre in December last year. Their swift and effective response helped to prevent what could have been a tragic outcome.
The Royal Life Saving Bravery Awards celebrate individuals who respond selflessly in life-threatening situations.
While many awards recognise everyday members of the public, these honours also acknowledge the exceptional efforts of trained professionals—like lifeguards—who act under pressure in high-stakes moments to protect lives.
Royal Life Saving WA CEO Peter Leaversuch said the awards highlight the vital role lifeguards play in ensuring safety at aquatic facilities.
“Lifeguards are highly trained for emergencies, but it takes incredible courage and composure to act decisively in the heat of the moment,” Mr. Leaversuch said.
“These lifeguards are an outstanding example of professionalism in action. Their teamwork and quick thinking saved a young life, and we are proud to honour their efforts.”
The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder has commended the lifeguards for their professionalism and swift response, with
Mayor Glenn Wilson praising the team’s actions and the vital role they play in protecting the community.
“We are incredibly proud of our team at the Goldfields Oasis. Their actions reflect the very best of our community courage, professionalism, and care for others.
It’s reassuring to know we have such capable and dedicated individuals looking out for the safety of our patrons at the Goldfields Oasis,” the Mayor said.
The event serves as a powerful reminder of the critical role aquatic centres and their staff play in regional
communities—places where lifesaving skills can mean the difference between life and death.
