The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder will host an inaugural ice-rink event these school holidays as part of this year’s Pop-up Project - Outback on Ice.

The event is a first for the city, as no ice-rink event has previously been held in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. The event will provide a unique wonderland experience in the heart of the Goldfields, offering residents and visitors alike a chance to give ice skating a try and enjoy a range of other activities on offer.

The nine-day event will be held during the school holidays on 15-23 April 2023 at the Oasis Playing Fields and will include a variety of sessions for all ages and abilities.

The ice-rink will be made from real ice and will host sessions for families with toddlers and young children, sensory sessions, and a youth event.

There will also be adults-only sessions featuring live music from a local DJ and pop-up bar from Lucky Bay and Esperance Gin Distillery.

Mayor John Bowler said the City was proud to bring this event to Kalgoorlie-Boulder after many years of planning.

“Our Events team have been looking at options of hosting an event of this type for many years, and we’re very excited to be able to host it this year.”

Outback on Ice will be a new experience for many who haven’t had the opportunity to ice-skate before or perhaps have never seen an ice rink or snow before.”

“We are particularly proud that we are making City events more inclusive and accessible, with sensory sessions and wheelchair accessibility an important part of making this event suitable for everyone in our community to enjoy.”

“We can’t wait to transform our outback city into wonderland of fun and provide an unforgettable experience for our community,” Mayor Bowler said.

Tickets for Outback on Ice start from $15 and go on sale 10am, Monday 13 March. Group bookings over five tickets in one transaction will receive a 15% discount. Tickets will be available at the event pending availability, pre-booking is encouraged.

The City will host a Grand Finale event for the closing weekend of the event, which will feature a range of additional free entertainment including a circus show, giant bubbles, an animal farm, face painting, mini golf, and more.

The City is also seeking expressions of interest from mobile food vendors and retail stall holders to be part of the event. Applications are available on the City’s website.
